Your dental tools are important because they support your daily efforts to keep your smile healthy tooth decay and gum disease at bay. Stocking up on a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and an oral rinse is your dental essentials. But there’s one more item you should keep in your oral health toolbox, and that is sugarless gum. Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after you eat has been proven to reduce plaque and cavities, and the American Dental Association agrees.

The main reason has to do with saliva. When you chew, it increases the production of saliva levels. Chewing gum stimulates this production of saliva, neutralizing plaque acids and washing them away. Over time, plaque breaks down precious tooth enamel, and keeping plaque levels down prevents tooth decay. Another benefit of increased saliva levels is an increase in calcium and phosphate levels, and that also protects tooth enamel.

According to the ADA, the most effective oral hygiene practice includes the following:

-Brushing at least twice a day.

-Using a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel.

-Remove plaque from between teeth (and along the gumline) by flossing once a day.

-See your dentist twice a year.

-Chewing gum for 20 minutes after eating.

By using products which carry the ADA Seal, you are assured that those products have met strict safety standards and are proven to do what they say. For sugar-free gum carrying the seal, this means that it has met at least one of these claims:

-It reduces plaque acids.

-It reduces cavities.

-It reduces gum disease.

-It helps remineralization of tooth enamel.

-It is proven safe to use on your oral tissues.
